Appendicitis: Understanding the Condition

Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, a small tube attached to the large intestine. It often requires urgent attention and surgical removal of the appendix.

Symptoms

  • Sudden pain in the lower right abdomen
  • Pain that worsens with movement, coughing, or sneezing
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever

Diagnosis

  • Physical examination
  • Blood tests to check for infection
  • Imaging tests (ultrasound, CT scan)

Treatment

  • Surgical removal of the appendix (appendectomy). Laparoscopic appendectomy can be done
  • Antibiotics before and after surgery

Risk Factors

  • Age (most common between ages 10-30) - But can occur at any age
  • Family history of appendicitis
  • Infections or gastrointestinal disorders

Immediate treatment is critical to prevent the appendix from bursting, which can lead to severe infection or peritonitis.
