Appendicitis: Understanding the Condition
Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix, a small tube attached to the large intestine. It often requires urgent attention and surgical removal of the appendix.
Symptoms
- Sudden pain in the lower right abdomen
- Pain that worsens with movement, coughing, or sneezing
- Nausea and vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Fever
Diagnosis
- Physical examination
- Blood tests to check for infection
- Imaging tests (ultrasound, CT scan)
Treatment
- Surgical removal of the appendix (appendectomy). Laparoscopic appendectomy can be done
- Antibiotics before and after surgery
Risk Factors
- Age (most common between ages 10-30) - But can occur at any age
- Family history of appendicitis
- Infections or gastrointestinal disorders

Immediate treatment is critical to prevent the appendix from bursting, which can lead to severe infection or peritonitis.
